Pyramidal questions contain multiple clues, gradually progressing from the most obscure to most well-known information, to better reward students with deeper knowledge of a topic.
Math is an important subject and rightfully has its place in quizbowl, in the form of questions based on math theory. However, math computations are rarely found in high quality quizbowl formats, because the skill used to solve them is inherently different than that used to answer any other question. Computation questions also cannot be written pyramidally, meaning that they are almost always answered by players who have a natural ability to perform quick computations.
High quality quizbowl tournaments use schedules that fairly recognize the best performing teams while promoting participation and providing a better value by offering all teams several games throughout the day.
