2023 MOQBA Fall Championship Recap

A tournament record 41 teams from 33 schools attended the eighth MOQBA Fall Championship at Columbia College on December 9, 2023.

The teams were originally divided into 7 pools of either 5 or 6 for preliminary rounds 1-5.

After ranking teams within each preliminary pool, the entire field was seeded 1-41 first by rank in pool, then record, then average points per bonus. The top 16 teams advanced to four parallel championship pools, the next eight teams advanced to the first consolation tier, and the remaining seventeen teams advanced to three more consolation pools of five or six teams each. Consolation teams played five games in rounds 6-10.

After round 8, Mexico A, Parkway West, Ladue A, and College Heights Christian were undefeated in their playoff pools, advancing to the top 4 championship pool, while the remaining teams advanced to three more pools of four to determine final placement in rounds 9-11. Mexico A and Parkway West were the only remaining undefeated teams entering their scheduled round 11 match, effectively beginning a best of three final. Mexico won the first two games 335-175 and 380-120 to win the 2023 MOQBA Fall Championship title! In round 11, College Heights Christian defeated Ladue A 325-215 in what was effectively the third place game. Hallsville A was the small school champion, finishing ninth overall.

On the strength of their performances, the top nine teams (Mexico A, Parkway West, College Heights Christian, Ladue A, Washington, Lee's Summit West, Webster Groves, Hickman, and Hallsville A) have qualified for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, which is scheduled for June 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in the Washington D.C. area. Information on this national championship event can be found at pace-nsc.org.

This tournament would not have been possible without our team of exceptional moderators, scorekeepers, and statisticians. We are so thankful for all of our amazing staff volunteers who donated their time and energy on Saturday: Liam from Fair Grove and Kendal and Phoenix from Houston; Owen Arneson, Braden Booth, Brandon Davis, Brendan Fuller, Matt Hudson, Jamison Jeffries, Zach Kierstead, Connor Lee, Alex Roettgen, and Becca Snavely; coaches Kathy Brandon, Seth Brummond, Jacqueline Cleveland, Joe Ford, Jordan Henson, Sondra Kekec, Shelly Kiesling, Ginger Luetkemeyer, Josh Malecki, Jean Miller, Ben Nims, Marteen Nolan, Jason Pounds, Sarah Roth, Dale Schenewerk, and Patrick Troy; and fellow MOQBA members Ganon Evans, Audrey Kierstead, Jason Loy, Max Ryle, Kevin Stockman, and Felix Wang. Special thanks to Kyle Hill for his continued dedication to enhancing the HILLSheets scorekeeping system; David Dennis for leading teams to New Hall after the team meetings; Michael Menkhus for additional assistance leading up to the tournament, including managing buzzer check-in; June Yin for additional assistance setting up the morning of the tournament; and Jacob O'Rourke for handling team check-in, entering the stats into YellowFruit, ordering the awards, and handling payments.

In addition, we continue to be amazed by the incredible support we always receive from Columbia College. The assistance of Kristen Neeley, Jason Ballance, Lori Doherty, the Technology Services team, Campus Safety, and the rest of the Columbia College team is critical to ensuring these tournaments run as smoothly as they do. Arriving to campus at 3 PM on Friday to learn that the admissions team had already set up the desks in most of the classrooms is just one of the countless examples of the unmatched support that Columbia College has offered us over the fourteen tournaments we have hosted there. We can't wait to return again in March!

Thanks to everybody in attendance for making this another successful Fall Championship! We sincerely hope that everyone had as great of an experience as we had directing the tournament. We always welcome any comments or suggestions you have toward improving our future events.

Finally, we would like to remind everyone that thanks to the fantastic administration and admissions staff at Columbia College, the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance will be returning to their campus to host the sixteenth NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 2. Registration opens on Wednesday, December 13 at 6:00 AM.

Best of luck to each of your teams as they compete the rest of the season!
